My quilting journey began at the age of 10, when I eagerly chose my fabrics from Norton House Quilting, the fabric shop my grandmother started over 55 years ago. From that day forward, she guided me through every quilt, overseeing my stitches and ensuring each one was crafted with precision and care. Her passion for quilting became mine, and every project was a chance to learn from her mastery.

After her passing, my grandfather shared with me that she had left her pride and joy—her fabric shop—to me, to carry on her legacy. It was in that moment that Quilting Your Legacy was born. This community and initiative grew out of the love my grandmother had for quilting and family. It’s now my mission to inspire others to quilt their own legacies and create heartfelt gifts for their favorite people—whether it’s a cherished quilt or a beautiful table topper.

Quilting has always been more than just fabric and thread for me; it’s a way to connect with our loved ones and pass down stories, love, and memories for generations to come.

✨The 5 steps in, Quilting Your Legacy✨

1. Inspiration and Planning

  • Gather Ideas: Explore various quilting projects and decide on a theme or purpose. This might come from personal memories, family legacies, or creative ideas from the community (like in the Monthly Challenge or Table Topper Club).
  • Choose a Pattern: Select or create a pattern to work on. You offer quilt patterns for $2, making it easy for people to start on their project.

2. Selecting Fabrics and Materials

  • Pick Meaningful Fabrics: Whether it's a personal selection of fabrics from special moments or general quilting fabric, this step ensures that quilters gather the necessary materials.
  • Prepare Tools: Ensure you have all the quilting tools, such as a sewing machine, threads, needles, rulers, etc.

3. Cutting and Piecing the Quilt Top

  • Cut Fabric Pieces: Using a rotary cutter or scissors, follow your pattern's instructions to cut the fabric accurately.
  • Sew the Pieces Together: Piece together the fabric following your chosen design, and sew them to form the quilt top.

4. Quilting the Layers

  • Layer the Quilt: Sandwich the quilt top, batting (the middle layer for warmth), and backing fabric together.
  • Quilt the Layers: Either by hand or machine, stitch the three layers together, using free-motion quilting or straight-line quilting.

5. Finishing the Quilt

  • Add the Binding: Sew the binding around the edges of the quilt to give it a neat and finished look.
  • Label and Share: Add a personal label to your quilt to document its story, and share the finished piece with family or in your Quilting Your Legacy community.
