I learned of the Grimm Brothers, “Stadt Musik Kanter” in Bremen, Germany while on a trip with my Grandfather. But first, thank you for coming into Norton House Quilting, we travel abroad to bring you new concepts and ideas. For more information about the story I’m about to share with you, go to, www.bremen-tourism.de and see the town.
The Grimm Brother's also wrote the fable, "Bremen Town Musicians." The story goes (or at least my personal spin on the parable), four animals; a donkey, dog, cat, and rooster decided to follow their hearts and passions. They didn't start the journey together though; first, the brave donkey said to himself. 'Enough is enough I'm breaking free of not honoring myself and my true destiny and what my heart is pulling me to do.' So, the donkey began the adventure first.
While on the road, the donkey met a grumpy old dog. The irritable dog was sitting on a front porch and heard the donkey singing. The dog picked up his head and asked. “What do you have to be so happy?” The donkey replied, “Time is limited. Are you living your life for yourself or someone else's life?” The dog looked curious and said, “I'm too old. I have nothing to give. I'm not happy. I want to live in the city.” The donkey gladly replied, “Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. I'm on my way to Bremen. Come with me if you please.” So, the dog trustingly left with the donkey.
Then, walking on the road singing together they saw a cat sitting in a field. The cat walked toward them and asked where they are they going? The donkey and dog stated it plainly, “We're going to Bremen to sing in the city.” The cat replied excitedly, “Singing is my passion, my first love. Music to me is like finding my inner self. I have given my heart to singing. When I sing, I can feel romance in everything around me. Although, I have never sung in front of an audience, can I come with you?” Without needing to think about the question, the donkey and dog said, "Yes."
Finally, they could see the city line, and everyone stopped singing. In the silence, they stood there in awe of the city lights. But then, they heard someone else singing. They looked around and noticed a colorful rooster singing the sun a lullable down.
The rooster stopped singing because the donkey, dog and, the cat was staring. The rooster looked at the animals and said, “Yes, can I help you?” The donkey then told the rooster about the incredible journey they are on and told the rooster that he should join them because of the powerful and beautiful voice the rooster has. The rooster snorted with laughter and replied, “No, I could never sing in front of a crowd - that scares me too much.” The donkey said, “Believe in yourself rooster. You have what it takes. I challenge you to dig deep within yourself to conquer fears.” The rooster looked stunned and took a few moments before replying,” Okay, let's do this.” The rooster said, "Yes." And off the four animals went to Bremen, Germany to live as musicians.
Before they reached the city, they ran into robbers who had broken into a house! It was scary, but because they trusted each other, they stuck together. The animals decide to scare away the robbers. The dog stood on the donkey’s back, the cat on the dog’s and the rooster on the cat, appearing tall and menacing, and then, POOF the robbers ran away from animals who stuck together to form a sizeable scary creature that the robbers had never seen before.
The moral of the story is trust your instincts, follow your heart. You're never too old or young to do what your heart is pulling you to do. Permit yourself to stand up for what you believe in. Keep in mind that the journey is never-ending. There's always going to be growth, improvement, and revisions along the way. Do it for yourself, do what's right, continue to grow, continue to live in the moment.
Come by to pick up the row in person. We are right on the highway located on route nine between Brattleboro, VT, and Bennington, VT.
